A Step-By-Step Guide to Seasoning Your Cast Iron Pan

Ah, the trusty cast iron pan – a kitchen essential that has stood the test of time. Whether it’s inherited from a great grandma like myself (thank you Great Grandma Bea), or a recent addition to your cookware collection, properly seasoning your cast iron pan is the key to unlocking its full potential. Seasoning forms a natural, non-stick surface that not only makes cooking a breeze but also imparts a unique depth of flavor to your dishes. Don’t worry if it sounds complicated – I’m here to guide you through the process in easy, foolproof steps.

  • Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Before you start the process of seasoning your cast iron pan, let’s make sure you have everything you need. You’ll require your cast iron pan, a clean dishcloth or paper towels, a neutral oil with a high smoke point (I now only recommend avocado oil), and a hot oven. Break out your favorite oven mitts, and let’s get started!

  • Step 2: Clean and Thoroughly Dry

Begin by giving your cast iron pan a good wash with warm, soapy water. This is the ONLY time your cast iron should even get close to soap. After seasoning, do NOT use soap to clean. Use a scrub brush or a non-abrasive sponge to remove any food particles, residue or rust. Rinse it well and pat it dry with a clean dishcloth or paper towels.

  • Step 3: Apply a Thin Coat of Oil

Next, it’s time to apply a thin layer of oil to the pan’s surface. This is where the magic happens! Pour a small amount of your chosen oil onto a paper towel or cloth, then rub it all over the inside and outside of the pan, including the handle. I personally use avocado oil for this process as I have shifted away from using seed oils

  • Step 4: Bake to Perfection

Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Place a sheet of aluminum foil on the rack below to catch any potential drips. Now, position your oiled cast iron pan upside down on the middle rack of the oven. Let it bake for about an hour.

  • Step 5: Cool and Store

After an hour, turn off the oven and leave the pan inside until it cools down completely. Your cast iron pan is now seasoned and ready to use! Store it in a dry place to prevent any moisture from affecting the seasoning.

With a little TLC, your cast iron pan will become a cherished kitchen companion, capable of whipping up mouthwatering dishes for generations to come. Happy cooking!
